The story of my best friend Jake

This is a story about my best friend Jake, a black and white Border Collie. It starts several years ago after a family discussion about pets, when we decided to get a puppy.

Having made the decision, the next question was the kind of dog. No hesitation there really, as we both agreed, that we would love it to be a Black and White Border Collie. Little did we know that by making this decision, what we were letting ourselves in for or how it would change our lives!

So the search was on for our new puppy…

It didn’t take long before we came across an advert for “Collie” pups for sale. After ringing for more details on the puppies, we drove to the kennels to have a look. Success, we found just what we were looking for, a black and white, male Border Collie. We fell in love with him straight away, signed all the necessary papers, drove off with him and brought him home.

When we arrived at the house we took him straight into the kitchen thinking that this would be the best and safest room to start out in. The poor little mite look totally lost and bewildered. He must have wondered what was going on and more to the point, where were the other puppies? He sat down on the kitchen floor, looked up at us with his great big almond eyes as if to say “thanks” and promptly peed on the floor!!

Anyway, having got home with “Jake” (that’s his name, by the way), we now had to establish his living area. Since we didn’t know that we would actually get a puppy so quickly, we had no bedding or food for him in the house. It was quick rummage around to find an old blanket for him to have as his bed. We had a corner in the kitchen that was made into “Jake’s Corner”. He snuggled down on the blanket and my best friend promptly fell asleep!

He soon realised this was HIS area of the house and was more than content to relax there! As the months went by Jake’s training progressed more or less, as it should. After only a couple of weeks he had learnt to relieve himself outside in the garden and not on the kitchen floor!

He also quickly learned what to do when he was told to “sit”. But he never stopped ceasing to amaze us, with his puppy antics and stubbornness... He dug holes in the garden, chased anything that moved and refused to walk on his lead.

He would park his butt on the ground and that was it…no go! He did eventually decide that having his lead on wasn’t such a bad idea, especially when he discovered the joy of “going for a walk”... which he adores!!

Jake has been very quick at learning new things, including how to get round “Mom”. He has grown into a well-behaved pet and we have no problem taking him out with us anywhere.

Travelling in the car is no trouble to my best friend Jake, he just settles down and waits, which has allowed all three of us to enjoy travelling around the country.

Getting Jake was definitely, one of our better decisions. Even though he never stops keeping an eye on things (us usually!), just in case something goes astray! We also know it’s his natural instinct to “round” everything up, but we are constantly amazed at how much energy he has... as any border collie owner will vouch for!!

As the months turn into years my best friend Jake has become more than just a pet. He is very much a part of our family...

Always faithful, no matter what… no questions asked and a constantly wagging tail! He also makes us smile and is full of fun. In fact, he is the most wonderful, loyal friend anyone could ask for!

In return, all he asks for is a comfy bed, food to eat (loads of it, if he had his way!) and to know that we love him.

Come back soon for more tales about my best friend Jake.
