Want something more elaborate? Why not cut out a butterfly shape from card and decorate using colored pens, glue and glitter. Write the party details on the back of the butterfly. Something like: Come to (birthday dog’s name) garden party(your address), on (date and time), for fun food and frolics.

Another great idea is to create a garden arbor invitation. Using an oblong piece of card, carefully fold one end to the centre then repeat with the other end. About half way down the two folded pieces draw some garden gates. Above write, "Why not take a peek through the Garden Gates?" and on the inside "The bugs and butterflies are gathering at (your address) on (date and time). So buzz on over and join (birthday dog’s name) for some party fun".

Unlike traditional garden parties, there are no set rules for a dog garden party and with the wide choice available, you could choose from beautiful giant butterflies to colorful dragonfly decorations.

We have found some great garden bug yard signs that will brighten up any party and set the tone for a lighthearted dog party.

Make a flurry of butterflies and bugs using lightweight card. Fix them to the fencing and walls. Using string suspend them from tree branches, put smaller bugs in the bushes. Make some large ladybugs using a black marker pen and drawing features on red, yellow and green balloons. These garden bug mylar balloons are sure to add to the fun. Attach them to bushes and hanging from tree branches.

Use a large garden umbrella, attach sheeting to the sides to make a small marquee style tent. Hang a sign up with "(birthday dogs name) Water Bar". For the birthday dog, these special party pails are an ideal gift treat or decorate small metal pails (purchased from your local hardware store with stickers of bugs and butterflies or paint them on and fill with water. Place inside the tent to keep cool. I’m sure your doggie guests will find them when they are thirsty. Use these as you’re goodie bag party favors when your guests leave.

On these hot sunny days make sure you provide your doggie guests with plenty of shady areas or a garden gazebo, to lounge after their hectic romps.

If you prefer to hold your party indoors, why not consider using a wall mural to give your house that garden feel.
