How To Make a Dog Party Pinata and their History
What is a Dog Party Pinata?...
Piñata’s are always a smash hit at any party. They are often made from papier-mâché and filled with sweets, balloons and small toys.
History of Pinata's...
Piñata’s are a traditional party game in South, Central and Northern America for many centuries to celebrate special occasions, especially birthdays. The exact origin of the piñata is unknown, but it's suggested that they may have originated in Europe back in ancient times. Other countries, Spain, Portugal, Greece and Italy also claim its origin.
It is thought that the first Piñatas started life as simple painted clay pot decorated with colourful paper and filled with candy treats and coins. Later, the more traditional star-shaped piñata was probably used as part of early Christmas celebrations to represent the Star of Bethlehem.
The tradition quickly spread and flourished throughout the world. Different shapes and designs were created bringing delight at birthday parties. A great entertaining activity for all partygoers alike.
Not only are Piñata’s a popular ” final” party game, it can serve as your bright and colourful party centrepiece.
How to play a Dog Party Pinata Game...
To play the game the piñata is suspended by a rope, at an easy level to reach. The guests then break, bite or chew it open (doggie owners would do this blindfolded and with a stick). Once they have succeeded in opening it, the piñata will release it's contents and then watch the mad dash to see how many goodies can be claimed (or eaten!)... For the "less aggressive" party guest a pull-string piñata is a great idea, so that your doggie guests all have a great time and no one loses out!
A Piñata party game will be the highlight of any birthday party, so follow the theme of your dog birthday party through to the end with a unique dog party Pinata, filled with small treats and doggie favors.

Special Dog Party Pinata Ideas...
A Piñata party game will be the highlight of any dog’s outdoor birthday party so follow the theme of your dog birthday party through to the end with a unique Piñata filled with small doggie treats.
As your doggie guests are unable to break the Piñata in the conventional way, with sticks, put the Piñata on the ground and let the doggie guests demolish it and retrieve the treats.
It would be a good idea to throw in a few extra treats, by hand, to make sure all the guests get some treats, as I am sure some of the smaller guests will not even get a look in!!

How to make a Dog Party Pinata...
Learn how to make your own dog party Pinata by following these instructions...
You will need:
A large round or oval shaped balloon
Lots of newspaper, to be torn into strips
White computer paper or paper towels, torn into strips
Flour and water mix for papier-mâché paste
Salt
Vegetable oil
Paint
Tissue or crepe paper
String or yarn for hanging
Instructions:
Making a Piñata can be a very messy project so prepare your work surface with plenty of newspaper or a wipe clean tablecloth, or make it outside in the yard.
Tear the newspaper into strips about 1” wide and 6-8” long. You don’t have to be too neat as the torn edges will stick together better and give a more overall smoother look to the finished Piñata.
It’s now time to prepare the papier-mâché paste. Mix one part flour with 2 parts water until the consistency is like thick glue. Make sure there are no lumps then add a tablespoon of salt. This will help prevent mold.
Blow up your balloon and tie a knot in the end. Place in a shallow bowl to prevent it rolling around as you work.
Cover the whole balloon with a light coating of the vegetable oil. This will keep the balloon from sticking to the newspaper when you pop it.
Taking strips of newspaper dip in the flour mixture. Apply it to the balloon at an angle Vertically and overlapping. Continue in this manner until the whole balloon is covered. (Don’t forget to leave a smallish hole at the top to remove the balloon and fill the Piñata).
Leave to dry before adding further layers. Each layer will take up to 24 hours to dry, so cover any leftover paste mixture and place in the refrigerator. If it get dry add a little warm water.
Apply a second layer of newspaper strips to the balloon in a horizontal direction and overlapping. Leave to dry then finish with a third layer of white computer paper strips or paper towels. This layer will make it easier to paint when it’s time to decorate.
When your Piñata project is completely dry, pop the balloon and remove it through the opening left at the top.
Now you can have fun and decorate your Piñata using vibrant colors and adding crepe paper streamers. Cut pieces of crepe paper and fringe them, curl round around a pencil to make ringlets, glue to the Piñata and hang crepe paper streamers from the bottom of the Piñata for that final touch.
All that is left to do is fill and hang your Piñata.
Carefully make 3 or 4 holes around the top opening and thread a strong piece of string or yarn through them. Tie a long piece of string to this for hanging. Fill your Piñata with all kinds of treats and doggie favors. Hang the Piñata out of reach until the end of your party.
